AOL: What is it good for?

By Melli (2000/08/09)

I Know, I know. You are probably wondering what in the world could I possibly have to complain about now. I was blessed with beautiful children, good taste in music, and the ability to COMPLAIN a whole lot! You see, I felt victim to a devilish ad campaign that led me, no wait, tricked me to believe that just because so many people have this wonderful product, then it has to be good. A product that was suppose to make my internet access the best on the block! I am talking about American Online. I admit it, I sold out. I allowed myself to be sucked in by this demon! You see, one day I so innocently opened up my mailbox and found this very pretty disk from AOL offering me 500 free hours of service for just checking out their service. I thought to my self, wow, what did I do to deserve this? How did they know that I was looking for an internet provider?? I almost sat down and wrote these very nice people a thank you note for their generosity. They had me fooled! I signed up for more service from AOL after my trial period was over, maybe out of satisfaction, maybe out of laziness, who knows. Six months later, and I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!

Lately, I am being kicked off of AOL at least 5 times a day. It usually occurs when I am trying to listen to music online provided by these two very nice young men. At first I thought maybe Ben and Andy had some evil nemesis trying to destroy their "station" and drive all of their many listeners away! Maybe the FCC was trying to track us all down and force us to tell them where the "studio" was located so they can dispose of Ben and Andy! I vowed that even if I knew where they were located that I would never tell!! NEVER!! Then I realized that I was the only listener being kicked off. My conspiracy theory fell apart!

You see, I understand that during peak hours, the server could only hold so many people. I understand that their is going to be an increase in the number of people logging on during the summer. What I don't understand is why am I paying for UNLIMITED access if I am limited on when and and for how long on, I could be online? Maybe I am asking too much from this great company that is AOL. Maybe I deserve to be kicked off every time I am online! Maybe I owe them an apology for my rude behavior. NOT!

I know I should just get a new provider, one that understands how bad it is to make Melli angry...I just can't bring myself to switch my e-mail address! It would mean having to contact the all the people that have my address, and I tell you, five people is way to many to contact! Soon I will see the light and leave this painful past behind me. I will no longer have to hear these god awful words being spat at me by the computer...GOOD-BYE.
