RealiTV Bites!

By Grant (2000/07/16)

Having spent a good portion of my life sitting in front of the TV, I feel that I have a good idea for what it takes to be good entertainment. I have sat and enjoyed various shows over the years: the Simpsons, News Radio, Drew Carey, Mystery Science Theater 3000, etc. happy as a little girl. However, there is something dangerous and menacing lurking over the horizon. As we sit around the television this summer, we don~Rt have the wonderful, welcoming glow of reruns to turn us from our TVs and return us to the great outdoors and friends that we had grown apart from during prime time. Instead we have reality TV banging down our doors and asking us to participate in the biggest fad this summer!

Now I ask, why do we like these shows? Why do we like to watch other people suffer like that? Why do we like other~Rs deep dark secrets paraded out in front of the whole world, but want our lives private? You people make me sick! I could care less about who wins Survivor, the fat gay man or the chick with the twin daughters! Big Brother is an accident waiting to happen! One new show, in pre-production, has regular people trying to hide from policemen and investigators hunting them down. I have read The Running Man, and it is not a pretty site. Maybe Orwell was right about the future~Ehe was just a couple decades off.

The problem is, I am just as much a bastard child of society as everyone else. Yes, I watch Survivor every week. I have spent hours watching The Real World. I even saw the king of all reality shows, Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire. I thought Darva was ugly and I can~Rt believe Rick picked her! I didn~Rt think that she should have survived the first round. And after all that talk about being a loving companion. Well she can burn in comedy Hell, cause Rick is hitting the comedy circut with his hair-raising experience with her. However, of course, he keeps an August edition of Playboy in the bathroom, so he can finally see what he missed while he was married. You know what is really w...hey I gotta get going..."Making the Band" is on!
